New York Mayor Eric Adams Withdraws from Election Race

29 September, 2025, 11:25 am

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced he will not run in the upcoming mayoral election. Speaking in a video posted on social media on Sunday, Adams cited ongoing media speculation and insufficient campaign funding as reasons for stepping aside, despite pointing to some progress in reducing violent crime and advancing city development.

Adams warned that local government was being used to push a “divisive agenda” and confirmed he would not seek a second term. He did not endorse any candidate, leaving the field open to former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Democratic contender Zohran Mamdani. Cuomo has positioned himself as the main challenger capable of defeating Mamdani, while Mamdani, if elected, would become the youngest mayor in the city’s history at 33 and a leading progressive voice.

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remains in the race, though his prospects are considered uncertain. Former President Donald Trump recently described Sliwa as “not a prime-time candidate.”

Adams’ tenure has faced challenges, including allegations of corruption and bribery last year, which prompted criticism and staff resignations. Although legal action was later dropped, his path to re-election was limited.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised Adams, saying he leaves the city in a stronger position than when he took office. With the election just months away, his withdrawal is expected to reshape the political dynamics of the city.
