Tesla to showcase Cybercab Robotaxi
Electric vehicle giant Tesla is gearing up for the launch of its autonomous robotaxi, named “Cybercab,” aiming to challenge rivals like Uber and Waymo.
The company shared a promotional image on social media on August 21, offering exclusive access to Cybercabs at an event scheduled for September 3 in Austin, Texas.
Tesla also announced a sweepstakes on its website, giving fans a chance to win tickets to attend the launch event at its headquarters.
First unveiled in October 2024, the gold-colored, two-seater vehicle is Tesla’s first model built without a steering wheel or pedals. Chief Executive Elon Musk earlier stated that Tesla plans to start mass production before 2027, targeting a consumer price tag below US$30,000.
Reports indicate that Tesla will initially roll out Cybercab rides for its employees on public roads before integrating them into its commercial Robotaxi service in Austin. Recent sightings of parking lots filled with Cybercabs have further fueled speculation of an imminent launch.
Tesla introduced its self-driving service in Austin in 2025 using Model Y vehicles, later expanding to cities across Texas, Florida, and California. However, regulations in several states still mandate a human supervisor behind the wheel.
Meanwhile, Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, Waymo, currently operates robotaxi services across 11 US cities.
