Bangladeshi-American Tahmid Chowdhury Receives Michigan Youth Leadership Award
Bangladeshi-American community organizer Tahmid Chowdhury has received the Michigan Democratic Party’s “Best of the West Youth Leadership Award” in recognition of his work in community engagement, youth leadership, grassroots organizing and public service.
The award was presented during the Michigan Democratic Party’s annual Best of the West event on Sept. 17 at the JW Marriott Grand Rapids. Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit presented the award to Chowdhury.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel, U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten and Michigan Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks were also present during the ceremony.
Chowdhury, a resident of Warren, Michigan, has been involved in community outreach, grassroots organizing and civic engagement across Macomb County and Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. His work has focused on strengthening connections within communities and encouraging young people to participate in civic and public-service activities.
The award is presented to young leaders for contributions involving community engagement, organizing, civic participation and public service. Chowdhury was among a group of young leaders recognized this year.
Reacting to the recognition, Chowdhury said the award represents not only his own efforts but also the mentors, organizers, volunteers, community leaders and others who supported his journey.
“My goal has always been simple: show up, listen, work hard, and serve the community,” Chowdhury said. “There is still much more work ahead.”
Members of Michigan’s Bangladeshi-American community also attended the event to support Chowdhury, including Bangladesh Association of Michigan President Jabed Chowdhury and adviser Sumon Kobir.
Chowdhury thanked the Michigan Democratic Party and the Michigan 10th Congressional District Democratic Party for the recognition and congratulated the other young leaders honored at the event.
