Nor’easter Batters New York and New Jersey With Flooding, High Winds
A powerful nor’easter battered New York and New Jersey over the weekend, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding that disrupted transportation, knocked out power and inundated low-lying communities.
New York authorities declared a disaster emergency covering the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties and contiguous areas as the storm threatened public transportation, utility services and public safety.
In New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency across eight counties beginning Friday evening, citing the risk of strong winds, heavy rain and significant coastal flooding. The affected counties are Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem.
Coastal communities in New York and New Jersey experienced flooding as high tides combined with storm conditions. New York City officials issued coastal flood advisories for several areas, including parts of Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island.
The storm also brought powerful wind gusts, downed trees and widespread power outages. In New York City, a Housing Authority worker was killed after being struck by a falling tree, according to reports.
Transportation services were also disrupted, with flooding and storm conditions affecting roads and other infrastructure across the region. Officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert to weather and emergency advisories.
New Jersey’s emergency order activated the state Emergency Operations Center and coordinated state and local agencies to respond to storm-related emergencies. The executive order cited the potential for roadway flooding, power outages and hazardous coastal conditions.
Authorities continued monitoring the storm and warned that additional coastal flooding could occur as the nor’easter lingered along the Northeast coast.
