Bangladesh Election Tension Mounts Over Osman Hadi Killing

24 December, 2025, 12:02 pm

Tensions in Bangladesh’s political landscape have intensified following the killing of Osman Hadi, brother of opposition figure Sharif Omar Hadi. Speaking at a public event in Shahbagh, Dhaka, on December 24, Omar Hadi accused a faction within the government of orchestrating his brother’s death, claiming it was aimed at destabilizing the environment ahead of the national election.

Osman Hadi was shot on December 12 while riding a battery-run rickshaw in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. Two assailants on a motorcycle fired at close range, inflicting a severe brain stem injury. He later died on December 18 in Singapore after being transferred from Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

At the Shahidi Shopoth gathering, Omar Hadi urged authorities for a swift and transparent investigation, warning that unidentified groups with alleged government links targeted his brother because he “did not bow to any agency.” Supporters gathered demanding justice, while the Inqilab Mancha renewed their 30-day deadline for arrests, cautioning that public anger could rise if the probe does not advance.

The incident has sparked protests across Dhaka and added pressure on security forces during an already tense election period. Analysts suggest that the case could affect voter trust, public perception of state accountability, and the overall political climate. Government officials insist the investigation continues and must adhere to legal procedures.

As the nation approaches the polls, the outcome of this case may play a significant role in shaping public opinion and electoral dynamics.
