Trump Says Netanyahu Will Not Be Arrested During US Visit
US President Donald Trump has said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested while visiting the United States, following remarks by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani that his administration was reviewing legal options regarding the issue.
In a social media post on Monday, Trump declared that Netanyahu “will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form” while in the United States. He did not directly mention Mamdani but praised Israel for its role during the recent conflict with Iran.
The comments came after Mamdani said in an interview that New York City’s legal department was examining what action, if any, could be taken if Netanyahu visits the city. The mayor reiterated his view that Netanyahu should face trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant against the Israeli leader in 2024 over alleged war crimes during the Gaza conflict.
Israel has rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction and dismissed the allegations, describing the arrest warrant as politically motivated. In response to Mamdani’s remarks, Israeli officials called the ICC a “kangaroo court” and defended Netanyahu’s leadership.
Netanyahu traditionally visits New York each September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
The ICC, based in The Hague, prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Neither the United States nor Israel is a member of the court.
