Bangladesh Reaffirms Commitment to Halve Road Deaths by 2030 at UN Meeting
Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety in New York.
Addressing the meeting on Monday, the minister highlighted the country’s ongoing legal, policy, and technological reforms aimed at improving road safety in line with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.
He said the government is expanding AI-enabled speed management, strengthening post-crash emergency response systems, and implementing targeted highway safety measures, particularly to protect pedestrians.
Rabiul also announced that Bangladesh is committed to finalizing and enacting a comprehensive Road Safety Law by December 2027, aligned with the safe system approach and international best practices.
Describing road safety as a national priority, he stressed that achieving the 2030 target would require strong political commitment, effective partnerships, and shared responsibility.
The minister is leading Bangladesh’s delegation at the UN meeting, accompanied by Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, and Bangladesh Road Safety Project Director Mohammad Shabbir Hasan Khan.
