Banglar Mela in New York, A Lively Celebration of Patriotism in Exile
Jolly Ahmed: One of the most vibrant cultural events for Bangladeshi expatriates, Banglar Mela, was held in New York on July 21. Organized by NY Bangla Inc., the event took place at Queens Palace in the evening, drawing a large crowd from the Bangladeshi community in the U.S.
The event served as a heartfelt expression of patriotism, heritage, and cultural pride. It began with a moment of silence and tribute to the victims of a recent tragic accident in Dhaka, where a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into the Milestone School and College building in Uttara, claiming the lives of several students and teachers. Organizers explained that the event had been scheduled long in advance, with performers already booked, so they proceeded with heavy hearts.
In addition to Bangladeshi expatriates in New York, the event drew attention from people of various professions and backgrounds. Notably, there was a strong presence of youth, whose participation added energy and color to the celebration.
A major highlight of the evening was the vibrant live music performances. Renowned Bangladeshi artists—including Rizia Parveen, Kamruzzaman Babu, Kala Mia, Enia, Shah Mahbub, and Rozio Azad—enthralled the audience with their captivating performances. The show was hosted by Mia Mohammad Dulal and Sonia.
Distinguished guests at the event included businessman Abdur Rashid Babu, community activist Fahad Solaiman, Naim, Duke Khan, entrepreneur Jharna, and Monik Roy Chowdhury, among others.
The event’s planning and execution were led by Shafik Mia of NY Bangla Inc., who said, “This program was only possible because of everyone’s collective efforts. Even while living abroad, we carry our traditions and culture in our hearts. This event is a reflection of that love.”
