Almost 200,000 migrants have been deported from the United States in the first seven months of Donald Trump’s second presidential term, according to figures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The deportations, carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), mark one of the sharpest crackdowns in recent years. Officials said the majority of those deported had either crossed the border illegally or overstayed their visas.

President Trump, who campaigned on a tougher immigration agenda, has repeatedly argued that stricter enforcement is necessary to “protect American jobs and security.” Critics, however, say the policy is separating families and creating fear in immigrant communities.

Civil rights groups have condemned the scale of deportations, warning that due process is often overlooked in the rush to remove migrants. Several humanitarian organisations have also raised concerns about conditions in detention centres.

The Biden administration had reduced deportation numbers significantly during its tenure, focusing instead on migrants with criminal records. But since returning to office in January, Mr Trump has reinstated broader enforcement priorities, instructing ICE to target anyone without legal status.

Analysts say the surge in removals could further inflame debates over immigration ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
