New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and city housing officials have announced a $31 million legal settlement against the owners of two neglected residential buildings in the Bronx.

According to Eyewitness News, the announcement was made during a press conference on Wednesday.

Mayor Mamdani said the settlement involves the owners of Robert Fulton Terrace and Fordham Towers, where tenants had reportedly endured years of poor living conditions.

City officials stated that residents of the two buildings repeatedly complained about the lack of hot water and other basic services. Despite ongoing maintenance failures, tenants were still required to continue paying rent regularly.

Following the financial settlement, many residents described the decision as a relief after years of hardship. However, some tenants also questioned whether they would receive direct compensation for being deprived of essential services for such a long period.

Under the court order, an initial $900,000 from the settlement fund will be used for urgent repairs and renovations at the two residential complexes.

Authorities also said a chief restructuring officer will be appointed to oversee the repair work and monitor compliance.

In the meantime, the building owners’ bank accounts have reportedly been frozen to secure payment of the settlement amount.
