Long Island Rail Road Strike Begins After Talks Fail

16 May, 2026, 10:09 am

A strike by workers of the Long Island Rail Road officially began at 12:01 a.m. Saturday after negotiations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority failed to produce an agreement on wage demands.

More than 3,500 employees represented by five unions walked off the job following weeks of stalled discussions. The unions had been pushing for a 4% wage increase, citing rising living costs, while the MTA had offered a 3% raise along with additional one-time payments.

The breakdown in talks came after a final round of negotiations on Friday morning ended without consensus. Union representatives said the offer did not adequately address inflation pressures, while MTA officials warned that meeting the demand in full could force fare hikes or service reductions.

The strike is expected to significantly disrupt commuter travel across New York City, where the Long Island Rail Road carries around 270,000 passengers daily.

Authorities are now urging commuters to seek alternative transportation options as both sides remain at an impasse with no immediate resolution announced.
