Jamaat shortlists mayoral aspirants for 8 city corporations

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the main opposition in the parliament, has selected mayoral candidates for eight of the country’s total 13 city corporations ahead of the upcoming local government elections, likely to begin from September or October this year.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council on Tuesday, although the nominations are yet to get final approval from the party’s highest and supreme policymaking body, the Majlis-e-Shura. The meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council was held at the party’s Moghbazar central office with Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of the party and leader of the opposition, in the chair.

Jamaat is fielding Amir Selim Uddin as mayoral candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation and Abu Sadiq (Sadiq Kayem), VP of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), for the Dhaka South City Corporation, according to the party insiders. Other candidates primarily finalised include Chattogram City Corporation unit Organising Secretary and former councillor Muhammad Shamsuzzaman Helali, Gazipur Tokat Gazi Osman Pasha University’s former assistant prof Hafizur Rahman, Barishal unit central assistant secretary general Muayaz Hossain Helal, Rangpur metropolitan unit ameer ATM Azam Khan, Khulna central working committee member and Khulna metropolitan ameer Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman and Narayanganj metropolitan unit ameer Mohammad Abdul Jabbar.
