Imam Released on Bail in Queens Child Abuse Case, Community Calls for Fair Investigation
Imam Tajul Islam, who was arrested in New York’s Queens borough over allegations of sexually abusing two children, has been released on bail after a court approved a $25,000 bond. The New York Police Department’s Queens Child Abuse Squad is currently investigating the allegations to determine the facts of the case.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions within the local Bangladeshi and Muslim communities. Families of both the alleged victims and the accused have called for a fair investigation and proper justice.
Community leaders have also urged authorities to handle the matter with seriousness and sensitivity, noting that allegations involving individuals associated with religious institutions are highly delicate and require a thorough and impartial investigation.
According to police, Tajul Islam faces several serious charges, including first-degree sexual abuse, forcible touching, and endangering the welfare of a child. After being presented before Queens Criminal Court, the judge granted him bail on a $25,000 bond and ordered him to stay away from the alleged victims.
Police sources said the allegations stem from an incident linked to a mosque in Queens. Law enforcement authorities reportedly acted quickly after receiving the complaint and arrested the imam before presenting him in court.
Following his release on bail Thursday, regular Friday prayers were held at Bilal Mosque the next day. Worshippers at the mosque were reportedly seen expressing concern, anxiety, and uncertainty over the incident.
In a statement, the mosque committee said the matter could be the result of a misunderstanding and emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing. The committee urged community members to remain calm and patient until the investigation report is released.
The mosque authorities also stated that if the allegations are proven true, appropriate action will be taken against the accused in accordance with U.S. law.
Additionally, the mosque committee announced plans to organize a counseling and awareness session for parents and students aimed at ensuring child safety and preventing child abuse. Community members and worshippers have been encouraged to attend the session, which is expected to include respected and experienced speakers familiar with child protection issues.
