Mystery remains after young man and woman die on New York subway tracks

A 24-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were killed after being struck by a subway train while sitting on the tracks in Lower Manhattan early Sunday, according to law enforcement sources.

The incident occurred near the Spring Street station at around 2:45 a.m., when a southbound train ran over the two people. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released their identities.

Investigators said there is currently no evidence that the pair were pushed onto the tracks or accidentally fell onto them. Some investigators are considering whether alcohol may have played a role, but no evidence has confirmed that possibility so far.

The circumstances leading to the incident remain under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined why the two were on the tracks.

New York police responded to the scene and launched an investigation. The station was temporarily closed following the incident.
