Trump to Delay Appointment of New White House Press Secretary
US President Donald Trump has said he will wait before appointing a new White House press secretary, leaving the position vacant since the end of August.
Speaking to reporters before departing Ireland on Sunday, Trump said cabinet secretaries would handle press conferences for the time being.
“You know what we’re going to do for a little while? We’re going to use the secretaries” of departments to hold press conferences, Trump said. “But ultimately, I’ll pick somebody.”
The position became vacant after Karoline Leavitt, 28, stepped down at the end of August. Leavitt was the youngest-ever White House press secretary and became known for her sharp exchanges with journalists.
Speculation has been growing in Washington over who could replace her. Leavitt said she wanted to spend more time with her family after giving birth to her second child in May.
Her departure comes as Trump faces declining poll numbers and Republicans prepare for the November midterm congressional elections, where the party faces the risk of losing ground.
