Sea Plane Carrying Eight Makes Emergency Water Landing in New York’s East River
A sea plane carrying eight people made an emergency water landing in New York City’s East River on Sunday, but all passengers and crew were safely rescued without serious injuries.
The incident occurred shortly after 12 p.m. near the New York Skyport Seaplane Terminal at East 23rd Street and the FDR Drive in Manhattan. Officials said the aircraft struck the rough water hard during landing, causing it to partially tip over, with one of its wings becoming submerged.
Emergency responders from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), the New York Police Department (NYPD), and several rescue boats arrived at the scene within minutes and launched a rescue operation. All eight occupants were safely evacuated from the aircraft.
The FDNY said no one suffered serious injuries. Although initial reports suggested that two passengers sustained minor injuries, authorities later confirmed that there were no major injuries.
Following the rescue, the aircraft was righted and towed back to the dock with the assistance of a tugboat. Video from the scene showed multiple emergency boats and a helicopter taking part in the operation.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation by police and aviation authorities. The incident comes just weeks after another sea plane was involved in an accident on the East River after encountering rough water.
