Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani revealed in an interview on Inside City Hall that he has spoken with President Donald Trump since their White House meeting last month, focusing on New Yorkers’ welfare, housing, and recent attacks on National Guard members. Mamdani expressed condolences over the fatal attack on two Guardsmen and discussed plans to increase housing availability in the city.

The mayor-elect emphasized his opposition to recent federal immigration raids, highlighting the case of a separated Chinese immigrant father and his six-year-old son in Astoria. “These raids are cruel and inhumane,” Mamdani said, noting he would continue to protest such actions once in office.

Mamdani also met outgoing Mayor Eric Adams to ensure a smooth transition and is considering retaining City Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos. He is evaluating where to hold his Jan. 1 inauguration and whether to reside at Gracie Mansion.

On relations with state leadership, Mamdani criticized Gov. Kathy Hochul’s approval of a new natural gas pipeline, reaffirming his commitment to opposing fossil fuel expansion while addressing the affordability and climate crises.

This conversation signals Mamdani’s intent to balance collaboration with federal and state authorities while prioritizing local issues affecting New Yorkers.
