Gov. Hochul Considers Restrictions on Masked ICE Officers

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has not ruled out imposing restrictions on federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers who wear masks or disguises during operations. The issue has sparked political controversy in the state following recent reports of masked ICE agents detaining individuals in Saratoga Springs.

At a press conference in Albany, Governor Hochul said, “Personally, I find it abhorrent. Creating fear while concealing identity is not consistent with the rule of law.”

In response, State Senator Pat Fahy introduced a bill aimed at banning the use of masks or disguises by federal immigration officers. The proposed legislation emphasizes transparency in law enforcement and public safety without interfering with federal duties.

Senator Fahy stated, “We are moving toward authoritarianism. Arresting individuals without revealing identity or showing a judicial warrant violates fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.”

Governor Hochul acknowledged that some ICE officers wear masks to protect themselves and their families from threats. However, she criticized the detention of immigrants who follow legal processes and attend court hearings.

State Senator Julia Salazar also expressed support for banning facial coverings and ending cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE. “The state should not interfere in immigration cases that are still under legal review,” she said.

On the other hand, Assembly Republican Leader Will Barclay opposed the bill, stating, “Criminals wearing masks are attacking people, yet Democrats are worried about ICE tactics. These kinds of restrictions only make law enforcement’s job harder.”

Amid growing debate, the New York State Legislature ended its current session without passing any new immigration-related legislation, leaving the issue unresolved for now.
