China Accused of Running Influence Campaign Against US Interests in the Philippines

Chinese-linked entities have allegedly carried out a coordinated information campaign targeting US interests and Philippine policymakers, according to Reuters investigations. The campaign, reportedly managed by a Manila-based marketing firm, used fake social media accounts to promote pro-China content and criticize the US-Philippine alliance.

Internal documents, interviews with former employees, and Philippine officials indicate that the firm, InfinitUs Marketing Solutions, created inauthentic accounts to amplify anti-American narratives and defend Chinese actions in the South China Sea. The accounts also attacked prominent Philippine lawmakers who supported stronger US ties.

The campaign included online media outlets such as “Ni Hao Manila,” which promoted Chinese perspectives and was amplified by fake social media accounts. Some Filipino figures received awards and monetary incentives linked to China-affiliated organizations, although recipients claimed the funds were used for charitable purposes.

Philippine authorities said they are aware of the “third-party proxies” spreading Chinese talking points online and are working to counter foreign interference. Experts note that Manila’s strategic location near Taiwan makes it a key focus for both US and Chinese influence operations.

While surveys show strong Filipino support for the US alliance, analysts warn that social media influence campaigns could shape public opinion ahead of upcoming elections.
