With Eric Adams leaving the mayoral race, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has turned his attention to former Governor Andrew Cuomo, linking Adams’ policies to Cuomo’s past leadership.

Speaking in Washington Heights, Mamdani said, “Eric Adams’ record, which has made life unaffordable for many New Yorkers, reflects Cuomo’s agenda for the city’s future.” He called Cuomo’s platform “politics of the past” and said it fails to address ongoing affordability issues.

Mamdani highlighted cuts to a healthcare benefit plan approved during Cuomo’s governorship, warning voters that a return to similar policies could hurt city residents. He added, “It’s not about who is on the ballot, it’s about what’s on the ballot.”

The former mayor also criticized Cuomo in the past, calling him “a liar and a snake,” a point Mamdani emphasized in his campaign.

President Donald Trump commented on Adams’ exit, suggesting Mamdani could face conflicts with Washington over funding. Mamdani responded, saying, “I think Donald Trump is going through the stages of grief.”

Mamdani’s campaign promises include freezing rent hikes, universal childcare, municipal-run grocery stores, and free city buses. He said essential city services like sanitation would be maintained, and department contracts would be reviewed for efficiency.

“Adams promised to bring the voices of the outer boroughs to City Hall and ensure safety and justice. My campaign will deliver on those promises while protecting residents from rent increases and expanding access to childcare,” Mamdani said.

Voters will now watch how Mamdani balances ambitious social programs with potential challenges from reduced federal and state funding.
