Stefanik Leads GOP Field for New York Governor, Hochul Remains Popular Among Voters
As the 2026 New York governor’s race approaches, Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is currently leading among potential GOP candidates. However, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul remains highly popular with the general electorate, according to a recent Siena College poll.
The poll shows Stefanik enjoying strong support within the Republican base, surpassing other possible contenders, though neither she nor others have officially declared their candidacy. Despite Stefanik’s solid standing within the party, nearly 40% of Republican voters remain undecided.
On the Democratic side, Governor Hochul leads comfortably for her party’s nomination, with a significant portion of Democratic voters backing her. While her popularity has dipped slightly, many voters still express a desire for new leadership in the state.
The gap between Hochul and three potential Republican rivals remains significant. Though Hochul does not have unanimous voter support, she holds a clear advantage in popularity and acceptability over her opponents.
The poll also highlights widespread voter approval of recent New York state laws, including the medical aid in dying legislation, transparency requirements for artificial intelligence use, increased prison oversight, and consumer protection measures. Support for these laws is consistent across age groups and religious communities.
Conducted between June 23 and 26, the Siena College survey sampled 800 registered voters and is considered a strong indicator of the state’s political climate and the dynamics of the upcoming election battle.
