Rat Infestation at U.S. Government Office Triggers Worker Protests and Remote Work Order

Employees at a major U.S. federal tax facility in Chamblee have raised serious concerns over a severe rat infestation and deteriorating workplace conditions, prompting protests and ultimately forcing authorities to allow remote work arrangements.

The issue was reported at the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) main campus located in the state of Georgia, where workers say conditions have become increasingly unsafe and unfit for normal office operations.

Employees, including current and former staff as well as union representatives, gathered outside the facility on Thursday in protest, demanding urgent building repairs and the option to work from home due to worsening sanitary conditions.

According to representatives of the National Treasury Employees Union, the infestation worsened significantly after the Memorial Day holiday, when workers returned to find evidence of widespread rodent activity inside the building. Union officials reported sightings of both live and dead rats in work areas, along with droppings found in desks, files, and common spaces.

Union President Denise Wells-Gomez said multiple nests have been discovered within the building, with estimates suggesting each could contain around 100 rats. Workers also claim that the campus has faced recurring issues with snakes and other pests in recent years.

One employee, Toya Lightwillis, described a disturbing experience inside the office, saying she suddenly found a large rat near her feet while working. “We looked at each other, both screamed, and then it ran into a hole in the wall,” she said, highlighting the stressful working conditions faced by staff.

Employees further alleged that pest control measures, including the use of poison and fumigation, were being carried out while staff were still required to remain inside the building, increasing health and safety concerns.

In response to mounting pressure, the Internal Revenue Service acknowledged the situation and announced on Thursday evening that all employees at the Chamblee campus would be allowed to work remotely starting Friday, June 12.

The agency said it is working with the General Services Administration to address the infestation and restore safe working conditions. A specialized pest control team has also been deployed to eliminate the rodents and prevent further spread.

Officials stated that efforts are underway to fully resolve the issue and ensure the facility meets acceptable workplace safety standards.
