US Halts Immigrant Visa Applications Amid Trump Administration Crackdown

The Trump administration has paused immigrant visa applications at US embassies and consulates worldwide as part of its broader effort to tighten immigration restrictions, according to a State Department official.

The initiative began in early August and has involved changes to visa appointments to allow consular officers to undergo additional training. The State Department said the updated training is intended to ensure officers can conduct more comprehensive and consistent evaluations of visa applicants.

Applicants who already had interviews scheduled have reportedly received notices that their appointments were canceled. They are expected to be given new dates, although it remains unclear when the interviews will be rescheduled.

US officials say the measures are aimed in part at ensuring that immigrants who receive visas will not become dependent on US public benefits. Immigration advocates and attorneys, however, have raised concerns about the impact on people who have already spent significant amounts of money and made major life arrangements to complete the visa process.

The latest move comes amid a series of immigration restrictions introduced by the Trump administration. The administration has also announced plans to revoke visas from some asylum seekers who initially entered the United States on tourist or business visas. The measure could affect as many as 200,000 people, according to reports.

Visa applicants have also faced increased scrutiny of their social media activity and higher processing costs under new immigration policies.

Earlier, the administration attempted to suspend immigrant visa applications from 75 countries on so-called “public charge” grounds. A federal judge later overturned that measure.
