A colorful family event was held at PS 50 Talfourd Lawn Elementary School in New York to celebrate the Bengali New Year, Pohela Boishakh.

The program took place on Saturday (April 25) at the school cafeteria and activity rooms in Jamaica Queens. Students, parents, and community members participated in the celebration.

The event began with a welcoming performance featuring the traditional song “Esho He Boishakh.” The school principal highlighted the importance of Bengali culture and stressed the need to pass cultural heritage on to the younger generation.

The program included various cultural and creative activities for children, such as face painting, henna art, flower jewelry making, and drawing sessions. These activities created great excitement among the students.

Food was also a major attraction, featuring catered meals along with homemade dishes brought by parents. Ice cream was distributed to all participants, adding to the festive mood.

The highlight of the event was a fashion show, where children and parents walked the red carpet wearing traditional Bengali attire, which received warm appreciation from the audience.

Organizers said the Pohela Boishakh celebration was a great opportunity for the school and the wider community. Around 150 parents and over 200 students from diverse backgrounds participated in the first-ever event.

They expressed hope that the celebration would be expanded in the future and held on a larger scale in an open venue.
