Mariam Khan aims for Connecticut State Senate after making history in State House
Pakistani-born Muslim politician Mariam Khan is seeking to make history once again, this time by winning a seat in the Connecticut State Senate.
Khan won the Democratic primary for the 2nd Senate District on August 11, securing 3,521 votes. Her main challenger, Windsor Board of Education President Ayanna Taylor, received 2,874 votes, while incumbent State Senator Doug McCrory received 2,255 votes.
With the primary victory, Khan secured the Democratic nomination for the November general election. Her district includes parts of Hartford, Bloomfield and Windsor.
If she wins in November, Khan will become Connecticut’s first Muslim woman to serve as a state senator.
Khan first entered Connecticut politics in 2022 after winning a special election to the State House of Representatives. She became the first Muslim elected to the Connecticut House and the state’s first Muslim woman legislator.
She won a full term later that year and was re-elected in 2024. Khan currently serves as Deputy Majority Leader in the State House and chairs the Select Committee on Special Education.
Khan would not be Connecticut’s first Muslim state senator. Democrat Saud Anwar was elected to the State Senate in 2019 and currently represents the 3rd Senate District. He was the first Muslim elected to the Connecticut State Senate.
Khan’s potential achievement would therefore mark a new milestone for Muslim women in Connecticut politics. After becoming the state’s first Muslim woman elected to the House, she now has an opportunity to become the first Muslim woman elected to the State Senate.
Before entering politics, Khan worked as a special education teacher. Her experience in education has also shaped her political work.
Her next major challenge is the November general election. While her primary victory secured the Democratic nomination, the general election will determine whether she makes history as Connecticut’s first Muslim woman state senator.
