Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued an unconditional apology to the nation for past mistakes, including actions related to the 1971 Liberation War. He made the statement during a discussion meeting in New York on Wednesday.
Dr. Rahman acknowledged that while most decisions of the organization have been correct, some have caused harm. “If any of my decisions harm the nation, where is the problem in me apologizing?” he said. Regarding 1971, he admitted the party had a role at the time, citing its stance in favor of a united Pakistan.
On political matters, he expressed Jamaat’s willingness to cooperate with the BNP in governance and stressed the importance of fair trials for all accused of crimes against humanity. On foreign policy, he indicated the party would pursue respectful and equal relations with India, noting that past agreements could not be easily overturned due to international law.
Addressing minority safety in Bangladesh, Dr. Rahman emphasized the party’s belief in national unity beyond majority-minority divisions.
