Florida Law Will Display Citizenship Status on Driver’s Licenses Starting in 2027

A new law in the U.S. state of Florida will require driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards to display the holder’s citizenship status, according to state authorities.

The measure is part of the newly passed “Florida SAVE Act,” which was signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. It will take effect on January 1, 2027.

Under the new rules, all newly issued, renewed, or replacement driver’s licenses and state ID cards will include information indicating whether the holder is a U.S. citizen.

Officials said the policy is intended to make it easier to verify citizenship status for government services and voter-related processes.

U.S. citizens will have their status clearly marked on their identification cards, while non-citizens, including lawful permanent residents (green card holders), will be labeled with a “NC” (Not a Citizen) designation.

Existing licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their expiration dates. Individuals who later obtain U.S. citizenship will be eligible to receive updated identification cards free of charge.

State officials also said agencies will begin preparing for the new format ahead of implementation in 2027.
