Bangladeshi girls shine at European math olympiad
Bangladeshi students have earned international recognition by winning silver and bronze medals at the 15th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) held in Bordeaux, France.
Monami Zaman won a silver medal with 18 marks, while Saji Sehnai earned a bronze medal after scoring 16 marks in the prestigious international competition.
The Bangladesh team scored a total of 45 points, placing 34th overall. Other team members, Kritika Chakraborty and Nahian Parin Ifa, also delivered promising performances, indicating potential for greater achievements in the future, officials said.
The EGMO, organised for female students at the higher secondary level, is recognised as one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions worldwide. Since its inception in 2012 with participation from 19 countries, the contest has expanded significantly, now attracting around 60 countries, 250 contestants and nearly 500 participants overall.
Inspired by the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the competition aims to increase girls’ participation in mathematics, where global representation remains relatively low at around 10% to 15%.
The 2026 edition of the Olympiad was held from 9 to 15 April in Bordeaux, organised by Animath and the University of Bordeaux. France last hosted a major international mathematics event in 1983, when the International Mathematical Olympiad took place in Paris.
