Attempted Attack on Advisor Mahfuz Alam by Awami League Supporters in London
Bangladesh’s Information and Broadcasting Advisor, Mahfuz Alam, faced an attempted attack by Awami League leaders and supporters while leaving a seminar in London on Friday, local time.
According to the Bangladesh High Commission in London, no attack was made on Advisor Alam’s vehicle. Instead, the assailants threw eggs at two empty cars belonging to the High Commission.
Advisor Alam had participated in two scheduled events on Friday. His first engagement was at the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), University of London, jointly organized with the Bangladesh High Commission to mark the first anniversary of the July Uprising. About 18 Awami League supporters gathered outside SOAS, raising slogans. Security arrangements by the police ensured that Advisor Alam’s vehicle passed safely into the campus.
After the events, some attackers lay down on the road to block the cars, while others threw eggs at two unoccupied High Commission vehicles in the parking area. Police removed the obstructing individuals, allowing the convoy to proceed.
Later in the evening, Advisor Alam attended a discussion at the Bangladesh High Commission, joined by representatives of political parties, students, and journalists. The London Metropolitan Police maintained close coordination with the High Commission and assured full security for Advisor Alam.
