Trump Agrees to Grant U.S. Visa to Mother of Bronx Teen Killed in Shooting, Mamdani Says
U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed to facilitate an expedited visa for the mother of 15-year-old Javitz Frimpong, who was fatally shot in the Bronx, so she can travel to the United States to attend her son’s funeral, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced.
In a social media post on Saturday, October 31, Mamdani said he had spoken with Trump, who agreed to the request to help the grieving mother obtain a visa without delay.
Javitz was shot and killed Thursday morning while walking to school in the Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx. The New York Police Department is searching for three teenage suspects believed to be connected to the shooting. As of Saturday, no arrests had been reported.
The teenager’s death has sparked grief and outrage in the local community. A prayer gathering and memorial service were held Friday at the location where he was shot. Family members, religious leaders and local residents attended the event.
Leandra Feliz, whose 15-year-old son Junior Guzman was killed in the Bronx in 2018, also attended the gathering. She expressed sympathy for Javitz’s family and pledged her support.
Javitz’s father said he had brought his son from Ghana to the United States about a year ago in hopes of providing him with a better future. He also alleged that the teenager had experienced repeated bullying at school and claimed that some students involved had recently been suspended.
In a statement, the New York City Department of Education expressed condolences to the family and said counseling and mental health support would be made available to students, families and school staff. The department also said it was cooperating with the NYPD investigation.
The visa announcement has brought some relief to the family and community, where concerns had grown over the mother’s ability to travel to the United States to say a final goodbye to her son.
Police investigations into the killing are continuing as authorities work to identify and locate the suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
