NYPD Reports Safest Summer on Record for Shootings and Murders

Major crime in New York City fell 6.6 percent in August, while murders and shootings dropped to historic lows, according to new data released by the New York Police Department.

The NYPD said the city recorded 724 fewer major crimes in August compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date, major crime has declined by 6.2 percent, representing more than 5,000 fewer reported crimes across the city.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the period from June through August as the safest summer on record for shooting incidents, shooting victims and murders. During the three-month period, New York City recorded 195 shooting incidents, 249 shooting victims and 66 murders, all record lows for the summer months.

In August alone, shooting incidents fell nearly 21 percent compared with August 2025, while the number of shooting victims dropped by almost 38 percent. Murders declined by 34.3 percent. Robbery, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft also recorded decreases.

The Bronx continued to lead the city in crime reduction, with major crime down 11.9 percent year-to-date and 10.5 percent in August.

The NYPD also reported historic lows in violence across the subway system and public housing developments. No murders, shootings or rapes were reported in the subway system during August. Public housing developments recorded zero murders and record lows in shootings, shooting victims, rapes and robberies.

However, not all crime categories declined. Felony assaults increased by 3.1 percent in August and 0.7 percent year-to-date. Reported rapes rose by 3.2 percent year-to-date, while confirmed hate crimes increased by 15.8 percent compared with the same period last year.

The latest figures highlight a significant decline in violent crime across New York City, despite increases in several other crime categories.
