Bangladeshi Delivery Driver Killed in Philadelphia; Funeral Prayer Set for Thursday
Funeral prayers for Bangladeshi expatriate Mahfuzul Haque, who was fatally shot while delivering food in Philadelphia earlier this week, will be held on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Tyson Mosque in Northeast Philadelphia.
The 43-year-old was killed Tuesday night while working as a DoorDash delivery driver in the city’s Kingsessing neighborhood. According to police and local sources, he was delivering an order in the 1000 block of South Etting Street when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him.
Haque was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Before joining DoorDash, Haque worked at Al-Sham Restaurant in the Willow Grove area. He is survived by his wife and a 14-year-old child.
Mohammad Ashraful Islam (Arif), editor of the local community newspaper Philadelphia Paper, said the sudden tragedy has left Haque’s family and the Bangladeshi community in deep mourning. Community members have called for a thorough investigation into the killing and urged authorities to swiftly arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
Investigators recovered Haque’s vehicle at the scene with its engine still running. Police also collected his DoorDash delivery bag and several spent shell casings as evidence.
While some members of the local Bangladeshi community believe the shooting may have been a targeted attack, authorities have not confirmed a motive and said the investigation remains ongoing.
Originally from Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Haque lived with his family in Northeast Philadelphia. His death has sent shockwaves through the Bangladeshi-American community, where friends and relatives continue to mourn the loss of a hardworking family man.
