Thailand’s House of Representatives has approved the Senate’s amendments to the country’s first-ever law aimed at protecting the cultural rights and way of life of ethnic minority groups. With a unanimous vote of 421 in favor, the bill now moves to the royal command for formal enactment.

The bill, titled Protection and Promotion of the Way of Life of Ethnic Groups, defines ethnic groups as Thai people who live together in communities sharing common traditions, language, culture, and history linked to Thai society. It aims to safeguard their cultural rights, prevent discrimination, and promote equal opportunities and quality of life.

Suspended Prime Minister and Culture Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra welcomed the House’s approval, calling it a “key milestone” for Thai society and ethnic communities. She said the law will help preserve ethnic cultures and empower these groups with dignity and pride.

The legislation establishes a national committee chaired by the Prime Minister, a council to coordinate ethnic affairs, and a national database to document ethnic groups’ lifestyles. It also introduces co-managed zones that respect community rights while conserving natural resources.

This law marks a historic step in Thailand’s commitment to embracing cultural diversity and promoting equality for all its ethnic populations.
