At least 49 members of a Rohingya armed group crossed into Bangladesh on Sunday following violent clashes with the Arakan Army in Myanmar. The fighters entered through the Hoikyang border area of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar and are now in police custody, awaiting transfer to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

During the fighting, gunfire from across the border struck a Bangladeshi house, hitting a seven-year-old girl, Afnan, daughter of Jasim Uddin. Initially reported dead, the child survived and is in critical condition at Chattogram Medical College Hospital after first receiving care at MSF hospital in Kutupalong.

Hoikyang Police Sub-Inspector Khokon Kanti Rudra said the clashes erupted early Sunday along the zero line and lasted nearly an hour. BGB Cox’s Bazar Sector Commander Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed confirmed the arrest of the 49 Rohingya fighters who fled Myanmar due to the intensified conflict.

Local authorities worked to calm residents after confusion over the child’s condition led to temporary road blockages.
