First Winter Snowstorm Hits Upstate New York, Travel Advisory Issued

4 December, 2025, 4:35 am

The first major winter storm of the season has hit Upstate New York, with the National Weather Service warning of significant snowfall through the end of the day. After a night of rain mixed with snow, snowfall intensified Tuesday morning, reaching nearly one inch per hour in several areas. While not as severe as previous winter storms, slippery road conditions are creating travel risks, especially during the morning and evening commute. Local authorities have advised drivers to exercise caution.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will peak around midday before shifting to a mix of snow and rain later in the afternoon. Snowfall is expected to gradually weaken around 7 p.m., though light snow may continue in some areas overnight.

With temperatures expected to remain above freezing in most locations, major accumulation is less likely. Orange County may see between three to five inches of snow, while Western Passaic, Northern Westchester, Putnam, Northern Fairfield and Northern New Haven counties could receive one to three inches. Higher elevations near Lake Erie and Lake Ontario may experience a foot of snow or more.

The winter storm warning took effect Tuesday morning and will remain in place through Wednesday morning for much of the region from the Northeast to eastern Maine. The tri-state area, including New Jersey and New York City, will primarily experience rainfall. While light snow has been reported in New York City, the season’s first major snowfall has yet to arrive.
