Muharram Al-Haram, the first and most sacred month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is being solemnly observed by Muslim communities across the United States.
In Carteret, New Jersey, Syed Zain Abbas and the Imam Bargah New Jersey have organized gatherings and processions commemorating this holy month. A special address was delivered by Dr. Allama Sakhawat Hussain Sundaralvi. The community made special arrangements to provide blessings and Niyaz (charity food) to participants, reflecting time-honored traditions. Similar observances are also taking place today in New York.
Events continue at the Al-Mahdi Center in New Jersey, with Chaudhry Imtiaz and more than 20 other Imam Bargahs across the state, including the Al-Khoei Center, coordinating processions and gatherings.
The first Muharram procession in Manhattan is scheduled for this Sunday. On the 10th day of Muharram (Ashura), processions will be held at the Mahdi Center, the Al-Khoei Center, and Malik Bank, with daily gatherings continuing for 13 days at the Al-Mahdi Center.
Senior Pakistani journalist Syed Shahbaz, based in New York, explained that these observances honor the memory of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) grandson, Imam Hussain (AS), along with the martyrs and prisoners of Karbala. He highlighted the participation of both Shia and Sunni Muslims in commemorating these events, expressing gratitude for the preservation of their faith and hoping for peaceful continuation of these traditions.
Regarding recent disturbances reported in Brooklyn and other centers, Shahbaz condemned any disruption and called on authorities to enhance security to prevent future incidents.
Muharram also marks the Islamic New Year and holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide. The 10th of Muharram, Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala. Islamic tradition further associates this day with other notable events, such as Prophet Adam’s (AS) repentance being accepted and Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) rescue from the fire. Fasting during Muharram is considered highly meritorious, second only to the fasts of Ramadan.
Carteret has emerged as a vibrant center for religious ceremonies in New Jersey, largely due to the efforts of young community activist Mr. Zain Shah, who annually leads disciplined Youm-e-Ashura observances attended by thousands of Muslims. Local county authorities and law enforcement ensure safety along the procession routes, while the community generously provides water and refreshments for participants.
