A Bangladeshi-American from Moulvibazar’s Kulaura is contesting in the upcoming Atlantic City Council election in the US state of New Jersey.

Sohel Ahmed, the Democratic Party’s nominee for the Council At-Large seat, is running on the mayor’s panel in the election scheduled for 4 November. If elected, he would become the first Bangladeshi-American to hold this position.

Originally from Kulaura in Moulvibazar district, Mr Ahmed currently serves as general secretary of the Bangladesh Association of Atlantic County. He has also been active in social, political and religious activities within the expatriate community.

His campaign pledges include bringing fresh leadership to City Hall, ensuring cleaner streets, reducing taxes, and improving safety and infrastructure.

A dedicated election committee made up of influential Bangladeshi expatriates has been supporting his campaign. After securing victory in the Democratic primary in June, he is now optimistic about winning the general election.

Appealing to voters, Mr Ahmed said: “In November, vote for me and the rest of the mayor’s panel so we can bring positive change to Atlantic City.”

Members of the Bangladeshi community in Atlantic City say they are eagerly waiting to see whether Mr Ahmed can make history on 4 November.
