Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Indian-origin politician born in Kampala, Uganda, has received a major boost in his bid to become New York City’s next mayor. On Sunday, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul formally endorsed him, citing a “shared vision” for the city.

The announcement, reported by The New York Times and Al Jazeera, comes months after Mamdani secured the Democratic Party’s nomination in May. Governor Hochul said their discussions convinced her that Mamdani wants “a New York where children grow up safely in their neighborhoods and every family has access to opportunity.”

Mamdani has already attracted an impressive roster of supporters, including Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, State Attorney General Letitia James, and prominent House Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jerrold Nadler, and Nydia Velázquez. Beyond New York, he has won backing from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and progressive House members including Pramila Jayapal and Ro Khanna. Former mayor Bill de Blasio has also voiced his support.

Mamdani’s campaign promises include free public bus travel and protections against rising rents for city residents. His progressive platform has gained traction among young voters and working-class communities.

His main Democratic rival is former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who remains a controversial figure following sexual misconduct allegations. At the same time, speculation has swirled about whether Donald Trump might step into the contest, raising the stakes even higher.

With growing endorsements and a populist agenda, Mamdani appears to be steadily emerging as a formidable force in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched mayoral races in recent New York history.
