Winter Storm Strikes Northeast US, Travel Disrupted by Snow and Ice

28 December, 2025, 5:42 am

A powerful winter storm swept across the Northeastern United States on Saturday, causing widespread travel disruptions during the busy post-holiday period. Snow and ice affected large portions of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and surrounding states, prompting officials to urge residents to avoid the roads. Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled as airports struggled to cope with the severe weather.

The storm moved quickly through the region, dumping heavy snow and creating dangerous icy conditions on highways. Airports and state authorities issued travel warnings as crews worked to clear roads, though freezing rain slowed progress and increased hazards.

By mid-morning, more than 14,000 flights were delayed or canceled, with New York City airports—including JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark—reporting the most significant disruptions. Major airlines, such as JetBlue, United, and American, waived change fees and advised travelers to check schedules frequently. International flights were also affected, with over 2,000 cancellations reported.

Road conditions were equally treacherous. Snowfall ranged from two to four inches in most areas, with parts of Long Island and central New York seeing up to 10 inches. Ice-coated highways in New Jersey led to long delays, and state authorities blocked commercial trucks in some areas to prevent accidents. Both New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency to expedite cleanup and support efforts.

Schools in some districts were closed, and many offices requested remote work as transit systems faced slow service due to icy tracks and low visibility. City crews deployed salt trucks to limit further ice buildup, while airports worked to reopen runways amid backlogs of delayed flights.

Meteorologists warned that additional winter systems could affect the Northeast next week, bringing more cold temperatures and light snow. Officials urged travelers to plan ahead as crews continue efforts to restore normal transportation and daily routines in the region.
