US Tax Filing Season Begins January 26, IRS Warns Taxpayers About Scams and New Reporting Rules

The 2026 tax filing season in the United States will officially begin on January 26, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The agency said taxpayers will be able to submit their 2025 federal income tax returns through April 15, 2026. Officials expect roughly 164 million individual tax returns to be filed this season, with most submissions likely to be completed electronically.

The IRS also warned that tax season often leads to a spike in fraud attempts, as scammers frequently target taxpayers through phone calls, emails, and suspicious links. The agency advised people not to share sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, or bank details through unsolicited communications. IRS officials noted that the agency typically does not contact taxpayers by phone, and instead communicates through secure messages in official online accounts or by mailed letters.

This filing season will also include several updated tax benefits tied to new policies under the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The IRS said taxpayers may be able to claim additional deductions and adjustments through a revised Schedule 1, including certain allowances related to tips and overtime income, interest on car loans, and increased deductions for older Americans.

The IRS encouraged taxpayers to use their personal online accounts for faster service and recommended that filers set up a bank account to receive refunds through direct deposit, as paper refund checks are gradually being phased out. The agency also reminded taxpayers that income from digital payments and digital assets will need to be reported under updated requirements involving forms such as 1099-K and 1099-DA. Officials stressed that taxpayers must report all taxable income even if a specific form is not received.

To support taxpayers, the IRS is continuing several assistance programs, including Free File for eligible individuals, MilTax for military members, and volunteer tax support services for low-income taxpayers and senior citizens. Taxpayers who need further help can also schedule appointments at taxpayer assistance centers for in-person guidance. Tax experts and IRS officials emphasized that filing accurate and complete information generally prevents problems, and although audits can happen randomly, most issues can be resolved with support from a certified professional such as a CPA or enrolled agent.
