Trump to Host Netanyahu, Zelenskyy as Iran, Ukraine Wars Reach Critical Juncture
U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Tuesday as the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine enter critical phases, placing U.S. diplomacy at the center of two major international crises.
The two leaders are in Washington to attend a memorial service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime Republican ally of Trump known for his strong support of Israel and Ukraine.
The meetings come as Trump’s relationships with Netanyahu and Zelenskyy have taken different trajectories. Ties with Zelenskyy have improved in recent months as Ukraine has slowed Russian advances, while relations with Netanyahu have faced growing strain over disagreements on the Iran conflict and broader Middle East strategy.
Upon arriving in Washington, Zelenskyy said strengthening Ukraine’s air defense and expanding strategic cooperation with the United States would be the top priorities of his meetings.
“Peace needs to be brought closer,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media.
The White House said Trump and Zelenskyy will discuss efforts to advance peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, with the Ukrainian leader expected to seek approval to purchase additional Patriot missile interceptors and discuss expanded defense cooperation, including drone production and air defense capabilities.
Following the White House meeting, Zelenskyy is expected to meet with all 100 members of the U.S. Senate at the Capitol.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s discussions with Trump are expected to focus on the ongoing conflict with Iran, tensions along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, and expanding the Abraham Accords.
According to Israeli officials, Netanyahu also hopes to demonstrate strong ties with Trump ahead of Israel’s October 27 general election.
“In these complex times, you need to act with both great determination and great wisdom,” Netanyahu said before departing for Washington. “We will discuss all the issues on the agenda, primarily Iran. Our goal is to protect our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us.”
White House officials said Trump will also discuss efforts to expand the Abraham Accords, the normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations brokered during his first administration. The president continues to seek Saudi Arabia’s participation in the accords, although Riyadh has maintained that normalization remains contingent on progress toward Palestinian statehood.
Trump appeared to strike a positive tone ahead of the meeting, telling reporters aboard Air Force One, “Bibi’s been great. He was a wartime prime minister. We did very well together.”
The meetings take place as both conflicts remain unresolved. Trump has said he temporarily paused U.S. airstrikes related to the Iran conflict to allow diplomacy another opportunity, while Ukraine continues to face frequent Russian missile and drone attacks despite recent military gains.
The visit also comes amid debate in Washington after reports that the Pentagon plans to delay spending approximately $400 million in previously authorized military assistance for Ukraine until fiscal year 2029, drawing criticism from both Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans who argue Kyiv urgently needs additional military support.
