Trump Administration Ends Paper Checks, Moves to Electronic Payments

30 September, 2025, 9:39 am

Starting September 30, the Trump administration will phase out paper checks across federal agencies, including tax refunds and Social Security payments, switching to an electronic payment system. The move aims to reduce theft, fraud, and delays in government transactions.

According to USA Today, the new initiative follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in March. Federal agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), will now issue payments electronically.

The IRS noted that paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, or altered compared to electronic payments. Using electronic methods ensures that refunds reach recipients quickly and securely.

USA Today reports that taxpayers who file electronically can expect refunds in their accounts within 21 days. To receive payments electronically, individuals must provide valid bank account information to the IRS.

Other options for electronic payments include mobile app providers, prepaid or debit cards, using routing and account numbers to receive funds directly.
