Thousands Join Bronx Chauddagram Society USA Annual Picnic in New York

New York’s Long Island came alive on 30 August as the Chauddagram Society USA hosted its much-anticipated annual picnic at Heckscher State Park, drawing thousands of Bangladeshi expatriates for a day of cultural celebration, sports and traditional cuisine.

The event, which began in the morning and continued until evening, was inaugurated by senior trustee Abdul Karim Chowdhury and convener Imam Hossain Apon under the leadership of society president Kazi Enamul Haque. Community leaders, former office-bearers, business figures and cultural organisers joined the day-long festivities.

Visitors enjoyed a vibrant programme that combined children’s races, musical chairs, poetry recitals, ghazals and live music performances. Dance and cultural displays highlighted the community’s commitment to keeping Bangladeshi heritage alive abroad.

Food was a central attraction, with guests treated to traditional dishes such as polao, beef and mutton curries, shrimp, dried fish preparations, sweets and fruits, alongside special menus for children.

A souvenir magazine titled Shikor (“Roots”) was launched by convener Imam Hossain Apon, who described it as “a bridge between our homeland and the new generation abroad.” He was later honoured with an Appreciation Award for his role in organising the picnic, which he dedicated to the entire volunteer team.

Society leaders stressed the importance of cultural and social unity in the diaspora. “This picnic is not just about joy—it is about passing on our roots and values to the next generation,” said former secretary Abu Taher Chowdhury.

Organisers announced plans to expand the picnic in the coming years and highlighted new welfare projects for expatriate Bangladeshis, including cemetery facilities in New Jersey.

The Chauddagram Society described the 2025 picnic as a symbol of solidarity, love and cultural pride among Bangladeshi Americans.
