Second Federal Agent Shooting in Minneapolis Triggers Protests and Political Outcry

26 January, 2026, 11:18 am

Public anger has escalated in Minneapolis after a US citizen was shot and killed by federal immigration agents on Saturday, marking the second deadly shooting involving federal agents in the city this month.

The victim was identified as Alex Pretti, 37, an ICU nurse. The incident occurred during a confrontation on an icy street, less than three weeks after another 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, Renee Good, was fatally shot while inside her car during a separate federal operation.

Federal authorities claim Pretti posed a threat to agents. Officials said a firearm and ammunition were found on him, and senior administration figures described the situation as a dangerous encounter.

However, video circulating online has raised questions about the official version of events. In the footage, Pretti appears to be recording activity in the street and helping direct traffic moments before tensions increase. The video also shows a protester being pushed down, followed by Pretti stepping in and being sprayed with a chemical irritant. Seconds later, agents struggle to restrain him before shots are fired.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz strongly criticized the incident, calling it deeply disturbing and demanding that the state—not federal agencies—lead the investigation. He also accused federal authorities of blocking full local involvement in investigating the earlier shooting this month.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump sharply attacked Minnesota and Minneapolis leadership, accusing them of fueling unrest. The dispute has intensified as the administration continues a major effort to remove undocumented immigrants, with reports indicating a heavy federal enforcement presence in the city.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged the federal government to end its operation, warning that the situation is creating instability and growing public tension.

As protests continued despite freezing temperatures, local police reported difficulties securing the shooting scene due to rising crowds. State National Guard forces were expected to assist with securing the area.

The incident has also sparked debate among gun rights supporters after reports suggested Pretti may have been a legal gun owner with a permit. Some gun advocacy groups warned against using lawful firearm possession as automatic justification for deadly force.

The situation remains tense as Minneapolis awaits further investigation results and official responses.
