Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several opposition MPs, were detained by police on Monday (August 11) morning during a protest near the Indian Parliament building.

The demonstration was organized over concerns regarding the neutrality of the Election Commission.

Photos and videos from the protest site show a large number of political leaders and activists sitting on the street, holding banners and flags, and chanting slogans. Some were seen pushing against police barricades and engaging in heated arguments with law enforcement officials.

Police stated that the protesters were removed to maintain law and order and to ensure smooth traffic movement in the area.

However, opposition leaders have accused the government of attempting to influence the Election Commission and suppressing a peaceful demonstration.

Speaking to the media while being detained, Rahul Gandhi said, “The reality is they cannot speak the truth. The truth is in front of the nation. This fight is not political—it is a fight to save the Constitution. It’s a fight for one person, one vote. We want a clean and accurate voter list.”

Rahul’s sister, Priyanka Gandhi, was also detained during the protest march toward the Election Commission headquarters, which took place amid ongoing controversy surrounding the Bihar SEIR (State Electoral Integrity Report).

While being taken away by police, Priyanka said, “They are afraid. The government is cowardly.”
