Poll Finds Majority of Americans Say Trump’s Deportation Campaign Has Gone Too Far

A growing majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump’s deportation drive has gone too far, according to a new Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll released on Thursday.

The survey found that 58 percent of respondents say the administration’s approach to deporting undocumented immigrants is excessive—an increase of eight percentage points since last fall. The findings come thirteen months into Trump’s second term, amid an expanded immigration enforcement campaign across the country.

The poll also indicates widespread anxiety linked to immigration enforcement. Large numbers of Americans report that people in their communities are living in fear of mass deportations and aggressive enforcement actions. Many respondents expressed discomfort with the tactics being used, particularly large-scale operations and workplace or community raids.

Public criticism has also focused on the role of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to the poll and accompanying public reactions, concerns include allegations of excessive force, insufficient training of agents, and a lack of clear oversight.

The findings highlight a shift in public opinion compared with earlier stages of Trump’s presidency, when immigration enforcement enjoyed stronger support among voters. Analysts say the results suggest growing unease about the human impact of deportation policies, even among some who favor stronger border controls.

The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll surveyed a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults and reflects broader debates over immigration, enforcement priorities, and civil liberties as the administration presses ahead with its campaign.
