NYPD Officers Shoot Armed Man Outside Bronx Deli
A 49-year-old man was shot and wounded by New York City police officers during an armed confrontation outside a deli in the Bronx on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. near the intersection of East 194th Street and Bainbridge Avenue in the Fordham neighborhood.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers saw a man identified as Victor Soto striking the deli’s glass window with a firearm outside Sammy’s Deli.
Officers stepped out of their patrol vehicle and ordered him to drop the weapon. However, police said Soto ignored their commands and pointed the firearm directly at officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
Police recovered a firearm from the scene, along with several shell casings scattered across the area.
According to the NYPD, before officers arrived, the man had allegedly threatened employees and customers inside the deli. He reportedly loaded his firearm and pointed it at people inside but did not fire. Customers and employees took shelter as the situation escalated.
NYPD Assistant Chief Anuudi Castillo said the incident was captured by officers’ body-worn cameras as well as surveillance cameras inside and outside the deli.
Police said Soto has eight prior arrests, including multiple cases involving assault and illegal possession of a firearm.
The injured man was transported to a hospital, where his injuries were described as non-life-threatening. As of Monday night, no charges had been filed against him.
Authorities have not yet clarified what initially triggered the confrontation. The incident remains under investigation.
