NYC Wegmans Stores Collect Biometric Data for Security

5 January, 2026, 12:15 pm

Shoppers at Wegmans locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan are now being informed that the stores collect and store biometric data, including facial recognition, eye scans, and voiceprints, to enhance security.

The information is displayed on signs inside the stores, highlighting the company’s use of these technologies. When Wegmans first launched a pilot program, management stated that any shopper data would be deleted. Some customers say the new policy has made them feel uneasy.

Efforts in the New York City Council to restrict or block biometric data storage have been under discussion for years but have yet to result in new legislation.

City officials and privacy advocates continue to monitor the issue as technology use in retail environments grows.
