NYC Issues “Stay Inside” Warning Ahead of Major Snow and Ice Storm

25 January, 2026, 12:03 pm

New York City officials are urging residents to limit travel and remain indoors as a powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, icy conditions, and major transportation disruptions this weekend.

A Winter Storm Warning will be active from 3 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday, with forecasts calling for 6 to 8 inches of snow and ice across most areas, and up to 10 inches in some parts of the city.

Meteorologists expect the strongest snowfall Sunday afternoon, potentially reaching 1 inch per hour, with conditions possibly worsening into near-whiteout levels. City leaders also warned that the snow may transition into sleet by Sunday evening, while lingering precipitation could continue into Monday.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said New Yorkers should prepare for extremely cold conditions after the storm, with below-freezing temperatures expected for at least a week. He advised residents to avoid unnecessary driving and stay safe indoors.

City crews have already pre-treated major roadways, and sanitation teams are preparing to salt and plow streets once snow begins accumulating. A Code Blue has been activated due to overnight freezing temperatures, with outreach workers assisting vulnerable residents in finding shelter.

Officials said a decision on whether public school classes for some K–8 students will be held in-person or remotely on Monday will be announced by noon on Sunday.

The city also confirmed that Citi Bike service will be suspended starting Sunday at noon, and early voting in several special elections will be paused on Sunday and Monday.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts and follow city guidance as the storm approaches.
