NYC and Long Island Nurses Deliver 10-Day Strike Notices

Thousands of nurses at hospitals across New York City and Long Island have delivered 10-day strike notices, potentially walking off the job on January 12 after their contract expired on December 31.

The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) says around 20,000 nurses at private hospitals—including Mount Sinai, New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University, and Montefiore—could join the strike. An additional 1,000 nurses at Northwell Hospitals on Long Island may also participate.

Key issues in negotiations include healthcare benefits for nurses and safe staffing standards. NYSNA President Nancy Hagans criticized hospital management for not guaranteeing these protections despite months of bargaining.

Hospital officials warned that the union’s demands could strain finances, citing federal funding cuts that have already impacted New York hospitals. Mount Sinai emphasized it remains committed to patient care while continuing negotiations, but is preparing for all possible outcomes.

If the strike occurs, it could become the largest nurse strike in NYC history.
